The Story of PAS

The birth of the Placitas Artist Series came about as a result of the happy confluence of a couple of timely events as well as the vision and eager participation of several Placitas folks. In 1984 the Las Placitas Presbyterian Church completed its new sanctuary and the pastor and congregation were eager to promote and share it with the larger Placitas community. One concert had been held there and the acoustics proved to be very fine indeed. Around the same time a group of string musicians recently arrived in Albuquerque from Mexico formed what became the Helios String Quartet and began looking for performance opportunities. The wife of the organizing cellist was a reporter with The Albuquerque Journal with friends in Placitas, who suggested she interview the pastor of the church for a story idea. The resulting article was “Placitas Church Serves as Hub: Varied Activities Foster Spirit of Community.” The other result of that interview was an idea: a Helios String Quartet concert in the new sanctuary! The success of that concert seemed to beg for more of the same and a committee was formed to set in motion a whole series for the following season. The pastor, the church treasurer, the church music director, the cellist, the friend, and a local artist organized themselves into the first board of directors, chose a name, wrote by-laws and planned the concerts. The pre-existing local art shows in the church’s fellowship hall would be promoted alongside the concerts and would later be incorporated into PAS itself. After its first season PAS incorporated as a not-for- profit 501(c)3, wholly independent of the church. PAS is currently celebrating its thirtieth season! * * * Sally Curro is a founding member of the Placitas Artists Series and continues to serve the organization as a board member emeritus

Dear Friends of the Arts

Welcome to our thirty-fifth season of fine art and music in the foothills of the Sandias. Despite the long term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the past season, we were able to present a full season of outstanding concerts and art exhibits using streaming technology, for which we remain grateful. I feel extremely proud of the accomplishments of the PAS Board and volunteers who pulled together to produce a terrific season. As we look to our thirty-fifth season, we anticipate a full season of live concerts and visual arts exhibits, and are proceeding as usual. We are pleased to bring back performers who were cancelled in the past season. The October concert features Eunice Kim and Xiaohui Yang, a violin-piano duo, and in December, the Shtrykov-Tanaka Duo present music for piano and clarinet. In March, our solo guitarist is Ana Vidovic, a native of Croatia. Performers new to PAS include Tatiana Shafran, pianist and winner of the 2019 Olga Kern piano competition, and Zuill Bailey, solo cellist, in January. Our local chamber groups include Kim Fredenburgh and friends in September, James and Megan Holland, cellist and violinist, performing piano trios with Tzu-Feng Liu in February, the Bert Dalton Trio presenting a jazz diversion from our usual chamber repertoire, and Kevin Vigneau and friends to close the season in May. So, we have lots of returning talent, and many new musicians to entertain with outstanding musical performance. Visual arts are an important component of the PAS mission. Each month we will present juried art exhibits that showcase the work of New Mexico Artists. The exhibits will be in the Fellowship Hall at the Church, and a reception for the artists will be held beginning at 2:00 pm on concert dates. All artwork is for sale, and the sales help support the artists, PAS, and the Las Placitas Presbyterian Church. We welcome youth of all ages to our concerts and encourage adults to enable youngsters to experience the performance and visual arts, whether live and in person or streamed on line. Any students in K-12 schools, accompanied by an adult will be admitted free of charge. Sincerely, Richard Reif President, Placitas Artists Series
